Abstract
In August 1983 a major portion of the Nidaros Cathedral (Trondheim, Norway) complex burned to the ground. The stone and sculpture stores were among the totally destroyed buildings. The collection of soapstone and marble objects suffered extensive fire damage, namely severe splitting and cracking of soapstone objects. Analysis carried out by the Geological Institute of the University of Trondheim indicates the objects were subjected to a temperature of 700-800°C during the fire. Since the fire, efforts have concentrated on clearing the site, reregistering and documenting the collection, administering emergency conservation, and rehousing the collection. -- AATA
