Abstract
The development of the term reversibility is considered. The practice of conservation provides a different definition of reversibility than the concept or the literature provide. True reversibility does not now and never did exist in most of the conservation treatments carried out by conservators (e. g. paper washing and deacidification; painting relining). It is considered that there is an extraordinarily high standard of treatment given, and the benefits are overwhelming compared with the damage caused. 4 references.
