Abstract
Old glazed ceramics at Karatsu, Seto, and Mino were analyzed by an X-ray computed tomographic scanner (X-ray CT), a scanning electron microprobe with an energy dispersive X-ray microanalyzer (SEM-EDS), a glow-discharge mass spectrometer (GD-MS), high-frequency heating-thermal ionization mass spectrometry (HFH-TIMS), a luminance colorimeter and an electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA). Using X-ray CT it was proved that there were some differences of homogeneity and density even among samples from same ceramics manufacturing area. From the data of SEM-EDS, chemical compositions of body and glaze in ceramics were proved to be remarkably different; the concentration of Ca was higher, and Si and Al contents were lower in the glaze than those in the body. It means that the softening point of the glaze is lower than that of the body. Differences of chemical compositions between bodies of ceramics at Karatsu and Seto were observed. This result was in accordance with the appearance of the bodies. Lead isotopes in green glaze in 8C to 10C are measured with a new method which we developed recently. The lead isotope ratios of 50 green glaze from 9 old major manufacturing areas are concentrated at one point. It means that the lead ore as the raw material in the different manufacturing sites is collected from one mine. In this study glaze color of the ceramics were measured by a luminance colorimeter. The caramics had been grouped according to the color of glaze. Samples belonging to each group are respectively plotted at closed area on L*a*b* coordinates. By the observation with ESCA it was proved that the coloring agent in yellow, dark brown and black glaze is iron and that its valence is trivalent.
