Abstract
Although it is part of the more general history of costume and dress, the history of dressmaking and tailoring and the tools that have made the creation of textiles and clothing possible is certainly worthy of a specific study. The analysis of the evolution of the tools, of pattern-making and dressmaking is a useful exercise, even though often quite difficult, which permits a greater understanding of clothing history. This article traces the history and use of the needles, tailors' sheers to the evolution of the sewing machine, in relation to the use of different materials used as clothing: animal skins to modern day fabrics. In addition, the evolution of measuring the garment on the figure, and the different types of closures (buttons, laces, hooks and eyes) are examined. The development of the tailoring profession tied to evolutions in the types and fashion in dress is discussed. Finally, the article is accompanied by an exhaustive bibliography.
