Abstract
A number of examples and experiences illustrate the conservation problems encountered in the National Museums of Poznan and Kraków, Poland, as well as in the castle museums of Lancut and Wilanów. The efforts of restorers have been aimed at conserving all that is authentic, without introducing materials that might lead to confusion with the original work of art. Some laboratories insist on strictly preserving the actual appearance of the object after excavation. Criteria applying to the training of restorers and the exchange of information are outlined. The examination, treatments, and maintenance of the objects are the subject of separate, detailed study, using ten selections from daily practice at the institutions listed above.
