Abstract
Before cleaning and restoring an old Japanese oil painting painted about a hundred years ago, the author investigated it by using x-ray radiography and ultraviolet fluorescence photography to get some information about any repainted areas. He further took a very small sample of the paint to examine its cross-section microscopically and made clear the painting method, paint thickness and exact composition of various superimposed films.
