Abstract
A series of German wooden sculptures from the 14th century was examined technologically at the Württem-bergische landesmuseum, Stuttgart. Normally the woods employed were willow and poplar. However, in one region oak and walnut were used. The wood was carefully selected and carved shortly after felling the tree. The surface of the carved sculpture was smoked with soot. Various techniques and materials were used for painting the sculptures.
