Abstract
Raphael's Small Cowper Madonna in the National Gallery (USA) had been extensively overpainted, probably in the 19th century, but was otherwise in good condition. The treatment consisted of varnish and overpaint removal, revealing Raphael's original colour scheme. Infrared reflectography also revealed the underdrawing, apparently transferred from a punched cartoon. Photographs, references.
