Abstract
Addressing small museums and historical societies, the author urges the initial need for a sound collection care plan, the value of having a trained conservator make an on-site survey of the collection as part of the planning process, and the feasibility of accomplishment. The article describes how to find and fund a conservator to survey the collection, then reviews conservation programs, services, and organizations that may help in this as well as in training and conservation treatment. Includes an annotated list of national and regional conservation agencies in the United States. See also AATA 23-1805 for a related article on the importance of conservation surveys.
