Abstract
The evolution of damascening from the inefficient method of early iron-metallurgy until the 9th century fusing of the iron-ore in the running smelting-furnace. The well-known Middle European welding-damask imitated the Oriental structure-damask wide-spread by the Romans throughout Europe. The technique of welding-damascening involves welding together several thin iron and steel layers. The damask steel-bars were then recast into various patterns. Emphasis is placed upon the torsional damascening because it is present in most damascene weapons and is the basis of more complicated patterns, the production of which has been described (See <i>AATA 14-580). Problems of investigating the technique of damascening are discussed; it is suggested that information about damascene weapons be compiled. -- AATA
