The description in Pliny's <i>Natural History of gilding copper using mercury is reinterpreted as a process in which mercury is used as an adhesive for gold leaf without the need for heat treat-ment after gilding to remove excess mercury. Laboratory experiments and a study of the older literature support this interpretation and emphasize the importance of substrate purity. -- AATA
