The primitive production of iron and steel in Africa was examined with emphasis on the surviving Dimi bloomery process of Ethiopia. Chemical composition was determined for the ores, slags, charcoal, metal products, and inclusions by the quantitative energy-dispersive x-ray analysis. The products made from different ores can be distinguished by inclusion composition in association with metallography. -- AATA
