The following methods for determination of penetration depth are described: coloring of polymer solution; optical and electron microscopy of stone; methods based on hydrophobization of consolidant -- wetting and etching by acid (for stone containing carbonate); color changes of polymer (during heating); observation under ultraviolet light; and neutron radiography. Advantages and disadvantages of these methods are given. The best results were obtained with the last method.
