Abstract
The aesthetics of an historic home usually receive much attention in developing an understanding of house usage. But plumbing, ventilation, and other engineering aspects of the building often have not been appreciated to the same degree, although these features can greatly influence lifestyles. The 19th century Hay House, Macon, Georgia, offers a fine example of how infrastructure allowed for mastery of climate, and, therefore, comfortable year-round living. For instance, air flow throughout the house could be controlled; bathrooms had hot and cold running water; and a below-grade suite of rooms provided a retreat from summer heat.
