Abstract
Traditionally, archaeologists have used subjective attributes, such as color change and luster, to determine whether siliceous lithic materials from archaeological sites have been heat-treated. A more precise analytical technique using electron microscopy to determine the presence or absence of heat-treated lithic materials is described. The technique is simple, inexpensive, and reliable; it also eliminates the inherent subjectivity based solely on visual attributes. -- AATA
