Abstract
The pre-Roman history of brass in the Mediterranean world is discussed briefly. Brass was used, though rarely in Hellenistic times, and might have been made via a preliminary smelting and distillation of metallic zinc. In the Roman world brass was produced more extensively by the cementation process.
