Abstract
During the 10th-16th centuries A.D., Islamic metalworkers primarily produced brass artifacts, a distinct change from the Roman bronze tradition. The alloys of copper, zinc, tin, and lead are discussed with special reference to recent metallographic studies of Islamic metalwork. The zinc cementation process and percentages of zinc obtained in alloys are described. The history of the change from bronze to brass in the medieval Islamic world is discussed along with specific brass categories which are compared to industries in Europe and China. -- AATA
