Whether brittle material is removed in the weathering of stone is a problem of restoration. Methods are available to consolidate deeply decayed stone. Silicic esters proved to be efficient for sandstone; full acrylic impregnation has been developed for extensively weathered materials, like the red limestones, which were frequently used for historic tombstones in middle Europe. -- AATA
