Abstract
An explanation of why mortar and plaster of the Middle Ages are more durable than current materials, although the materials appear to be the same. Lime was slaked after mixing with additives and not before, as currently practiced. A test demonstrates that Plasters made in this way are more resistant than those prepared from lime slaked beforehand. The use of common mussels and travertine to produce lime is mentioned.
