Abstract
An article adapted from the catalog Sculpture from Notre-Dame, Paris: A Dramatic Discovery, by the author, discusses the political vandalism associated with the French Revolution; on October 23, 1793, twenty-eight figures in the Gallery of Kings of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris were beheaded and otherwise damaged upon orders of the General Council of the Commune. Several fragments have beeri recovered at various times; the largest and most recently discovered group was unearthed in April 1977. The history of these figures, their destruction, and some of the subsequent history of the scattered fragments are discussed. -- AATA
