The invention relates to oil-modified phenolic resole varnishes particularly useful for impregnating paper laminates. Specifically, the invention relates to such compositions in which an economical and useful mixture of alcohols is used as the reaction medium for the resole formation. Laminates prepared using the varnish are characterized by salutary qualitites. Knowledge of the manufacture of paper laminates can aid in their conservation.
