Abstract
A photographic collection from the Art Institute of Chicago was monitored for deterioration during a twelve week traveling exhibition. Prints representing the period 1842 - 1982 were included. Storage conditions during traveling and exhibition conditions are described; conditions of exhibition were better than are normally found. Fifteen of 38 prints changed 10% or less in density; 6 changed more than 10%. Albumen prints in good condition showed the greatest change in density. Surprisingly, a platinum and palladium print, expected to show extreme stability, yellowed considerably. Color photographs changed less than expected. The observed levels of deterioration are considered excessive.
