Abstract
As part of an investigation of the introduction of rice to the western Pacific, rice standards were characterized by infrared chromatography. All rice extracts emerged in the IR spectra, and Asian short grain rice showed a distinctive spectrum. Gas-liquid chromatography identified distinctive fatty acids. A spectrum extracted from an archaeological specimen from Borneo appeared to match the broad rice spectra. In sum, this is a promising approach to identification of rice in unknown residues.
