Abstract
Of interest to the conservator is information about pinchbeck, invented around 1725, which is an alloy of copper and zinc -- similar to brass but containing more copper. Items of this alloy were frequently gilded, but there is little perceptible difference in appearance when the gilding wears off. An acid test is used for determining the presence of gold. -- AATA
