Abstract
An attempt is made to date ancient textiles on the bases of electronmicroscopical observations and measurements of the degree of polymerization (D.P.) of cellulosic polymers. Because the D.P. of modern linen is known to be 2000-2500 and the D.P. of ancient linen can be measured, the authors assumed that by designing a mathematical equation that includes both the D.P. and the time, they could arrive at a dating method. Using this equation they have already succeeded in drawing a graphic scheme into which several linens of known age could be placed in the corresponding age locations. -- AATA
