Abstract
The mechanical clock, invented shortly before 1300 A.D., marked a turning point in mechanical technology; however, very few were made before 1550 A.D. Germany, the European leader in metal mining, also took the lead in clockmaking. The training of the clockmaker is described; the Augsburg regulation of 1577 describing the requirements of the master-piece is cited. Materials are described; cooperation was sought from cabinetmakers and brass founders. The apprentice clockmaker's most important tool was the file. The pendulum clock, invented in 1657, was utilitarian rather than artistic and marked the end of an era in clockmaking. -- AATA
