Abstract
Crusader bezants were struck in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem on a carefully-controlled standard of 80% gold, which gave way in about 1187 to a 67% standard. There was an earlier phase in which the bezants varied from about 95 to 85% gold. At Tripoli the weight and alloy standards were different, and most of the coins are around 62% fine. The Agnus Dei bezant is on the 67% standard. The half-bezant is probably a modern forgery. Gold was apparently minted at two mints in the Latin Kingdom, Acre and (probably) Tyre; at Tripoli; possibly in Oultre-Jourdain; but not at Antioch. -- AATA
