Briefly surveys the problems of historic preservation in the German Democratic Republic 1945-1990: war damage and provisory protection of ruins reconstruction or demolition of monuments because of incompatibility with Communist ideology; deterioration due to lack of maintenance, disuse, or abandonment, or due to air pollution, poor building materials, lack of means, and public and private initiatives for urban conservation.
