Abstract
The author's intent is to provide an elementary introduction to the appearance of prints. The study of the image of the prints is approached from an epistemological orientation. The various kinds of prints are identified and a cursory discussion of the techniques and tools used in the production of each type of print is presented. Illustrations are reproduced to illustrate specific points for identifying technique or techniques used in a particular print. The interplay of light on ink and paper is important in noting the printing process, the nature of touch-ups, and paper repairs. Viewing with raking light (preferably natural sunlight) is explained. The 1987 revised and enlarged edition was prepared by Marjorie B. Cohn.
