Abstract
Twenty-eight copper-based coins from Caesarea Cappadocia, minted between 180 and 244 A.D., were analyzed for Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, As, Sn. Sb, and Pb using x-ray fluorescence. Compositions were compared with contemporaneous coins minted in Rome. The Commodus coins of 180192 A.D. contain 13.5 ± 4.5% Zn compared with about 4 ± 3% Zn in several coins minted in Rome, showing that orichalcum coins in Rome were debased sooner than coins at Caesarea. Otherwise the compositions of coins at Caesarea and Rome were fairly comparable. The excellent style, good quality workmanship, and good metal content (relatively high zinc and low lead) indicate that coins produced at Caesarea were indeed important in the Roman colonial govemment, a previously stated by numismatists. Metallographic investigations of four coins uncovered nothing unusual.
