The structure and composition of marble are described along with the causes and results of the decay of stone sculpture. Methods of conservation such as: removal of dust, stabilization of paint, removal of water soluble salts, strengthening of the stone structure, correction of old restorations, consolidating, filling, and inpainting as practiced by Hermitage restorers are given. -- AATA
