Abstract
Leather substitutes, especially the expanded type, are processed mainly into outerwear, shoes (upper material and linings), and fancy goods. They are also used to a lesser extent for covering chairs. This article reviews the history and development of expanded artificial leathers, i.e. those with a foam backing or inter-layer.
