Abstract
Small concentrations of elements introduced into a wood matrix have been shown to influence measurably the photon mass attenuation coefficient although the corresponding changes in the physical density are negligible. This has implications in dendrochronology where the interpretation of densitometric data is based on x-ray radiographs of wood. The magnitude of such effects was evaluated for selected elements by simulating various botanical matrices.
