Abstract
Three methods of estimating the temperature at which pottery was fired in antiquity (the initial firing temperature) are briefly discussed. All the methods really give estimates of the sintering temperature and so can not be used for pottery fired below about 800° C. Results are compared and also related to chemical and mineralogical composition. The generally good agreement is encouraging in the search for means of determining the sources of ancient potsherds. -- AATA
