Abstract
This article surveys the possible production methods used by the Gaulish potters in the first and second centuries A.D. Attempts to produce Samian ware over the last hundred years are discussed and the problems of the preparation of the clays and coating suspensions are considered. The major difficulties of producing a finish of the correct color and texture are illustrated by recent experiments using a variety of local clays. Consideration is given to the failure of Samian production in Roman Britain, and evidence is offered to suggest that suitable clays were available in the province. A climatic or political reason may account for the failure. -- AATA
