Abstract
A book dated 1809 and containing 276 water-color samples with manuscript notes on their origin, permanence and working properties in oil and water color was compiled by George Field, English author and colormaker. It contains many references to color suppliers and artists working in England in the early nineteenth century. Benjamin West and Washington Allston are both mentioned in connection with chrome yellow, the early history of which was closely linked to the United States. In the mid-nineteenth century the book passed from Field to Newton (a founder of the color firm Winsor and Newton) with whose family it remained until 1973 when it was placed on loan with the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. -- AATA
