Abstract
Over fifty dyes and mordants used by a Staffordshire dyer of the 1830s and 1840s are described and discussed with full bibliographical details. About half of these substances were in use before 1600. Vegetable dyes discussed include alder bark, anatto, brazil, camwood, catechu, ebony, fustic, indigo, logwood, madder, orchil, safflower, turmeric, and weld. Animal dyes include cochineal and lac. Mordants and assistants' include acetic acid, alum, bichrome', copperas, copper sulphate, tannin substances (galls, sumach, valonia), iron salts, oils, changing acid', HCL, H<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub>, HNO<sub>3</sub>, potassium carbonate, prussiate of potash, soda, tartars, tin compounds and verdigns. Other substances include fuller's earth, size, soap and sulfur. -- AATA
