Abstract
The steps in the restoration of the 31 maps comprising'the Geography,' a fifteenth-century Italian atlas are discussed. Damages to the sheets were biological, pigment, and mechanical and those of acidity. Investigation uncovered five different watermarks. Pigments were identified by spectroscopic analysis. Sheets damaged by fungi were restored by a pulpfilling apparatus, PVA-3, which operates on the principle of papermaking by hand.
