Abstract
Experimentation demonstrates that the retouched edges of molluscan shells can be used effectively as butchery knives and that they leave striations on bone surfaces that may be indistinguishable from cut-marks made by stone knives. The potential of such non-lithic cutting tools suggests one new possible category of early artifact, and may explain the presence of cut-marks on fossil bones in palaeoenvironments where stone artifacts were absent or rare.
