Lavas and Volcanic Tuffs (1990 : Easter Island, Chile
Abstract
The deterioration process undergone by the statues of Easter Island is by now a proven fact. This exponential process is caused by weathering and the nature of the stone, a volcanic tuff. With the aim of conserving this heritage, an experimental treatment was carried out with the support of UNDP-UNESCO and the advice of international experts in the field. The treatment carried out was later evaluated on samples using artificial aging in the laboratory. The results show the effectiveness of ethyl silicate as a consolidant for volcanic tuff.
