Abstract
The Commission on Preservation and Access convened a seminar on the preservation of scholarly resources for art history at Spring Hill, Minnesota, 29 September-1 October 1988. The composition of the commission, its sponsors, names of participants, and agenda are included in the report. The aim was to consider, within the new national preservation program, the particular status of art history collections, the specialized requirements of art historians because of their dependence upon images, and strategies for productive participation in a massive, federally supported reformatting program. The major focus of this seminar was the preservation of the intellectual content rather than the conservation of the individual artifact. Considering that deteriorating acid paper is causing major losses of material, new technologies, e.g., electronic imaging, photographic techniques, and computer networking of visual resources, were reviewed, and a series of recommendations developed.
