Artificial weathering of three softwoods and four hardwoods was carried out with light alone at controlled temperatures and relative humidity and with cyclical wetting during light exposure. Changes in the functional groups on the surface of the wood were followed by diffuse reflectance infrared spectrophotometry. The results indicate free radical attack upon the lignin. All samples tended toward similar surface composition after aging. Differences in resistance to the weathering process are noted.
