Sets out a theoretical framework for investigating technological change. A case study shows that potters could exploit their technical knowledge in different ways: for instance the Archaic potters opted for ease of manufacture and portability, whereas Woodland potters valued heating effectiveness and longer life, and adjusted their technology accordingly.
