Abstract
Describes the mounting for vertical display of two severely distorted paintings on rawhide by Kiowa artist Hawgone. Both paintings had lain unmounted in storage drawers at the Lowie Museum of Anthropology. Deeply rabbeted frames were prepared to hold double window mats in which Japanese paper hinges adhered with wheat-starch paste supported the paintings with minimal strain. The project, carried out for a 1980 exhibition at the Downtown Center of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, included tests of an unidentified yellow coating on the back of one painting.
