Abstract
Discusses an exhibition of photographs, 1857-1914, by William Notman and his associates at William Notman's Photographic Studio, Montreal, Canada. Chapters are devoted to: Notman's activity in Scotland before 1856, and in Montreal thereafter; Benjamin F. Baltzly's views of the North Thompson River wilderness, taken on an 1871 expedition; the work of Notman's son, William McFarlane Notman; the landscape photographs of William Haggerty; works by anonymous studio photographers; and some of the techniques the studio employed for enhancing effects, including watercolor or oil tinting and composite photos. These were produced by photographing each individual separately in the studio, the photographers working according to a sketch made by the art department. Each person was photographed in a predetermined pose and to the size shown on the sketch. When the prints were made, the figures were cut out and pasted onto a painted background of appropriate character and scale. The prints exhibited are from the Notman Photographic Archives of the McCord Museum, McGill University, Montreal.
