Abstract
This symposium made use of an interdisciplinary approach in dealing with the issues of diagnosis, documentation, and monitoring it addresses; four contributions were presented on each and are abstracted herein. For planning and diagnosis, Frank Preusser presents the preliminary investigations carried out for the Tomb of Nefertari, while Ornella Casazza and Sabino Giovannoni discuss those on the Brancacci Chapel. Along with these, the general problems of architectural support were examined by Claus Arendt, and documentation, by Karl Ludwig Dasser. The problems of treatment were grouped in this way: Central Asian paintings in the British Museum, by Seamus Hanna and Jennifer Dinsmore; the Romanesque paintings of Lambach, by Ivo Hammer; and two contributions on Michelangelo's frescoes on the Sistine Chapel vault by Fabrizio Mancinelli and Gianluigi Colalucci. In the session devoted to monitoring, several contributions were presented: Andreas Arnold and Konrad Zehnder on the effects of soluble salts; Eric Moormann with a historical survey of the discovery and early treatment of Roman paintings; and Mauro Matteini with an assessment of Florentine conservation methods.
