Reviews the various proposals and projects for the construction of the via Nazionale axis, connecting important squares, Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza Venezia, in the redevelopment of Rome as capital of Italy (1860 and 1870): the layout of streets; problems of topography; rebuilding of the adjacent areas; transformation of existing structures; embellishment of streetscape.
