Abstract
Wall paintings on loess from Dalversine in Northern Afghanistan were conserved in the field prior to laboratory treatment. The method uses dilute PMBA in xylol on the painted surface, followed by a concentrated PMBA/acetone solution which forms a continuous film on the surface. The surface is then protected with 2-3 layers of cheesecloth applied with 10% aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol. After the fragments are removed from the wall, the loess is thinned, stabilized with PMBA, and backed with cheesecloth. Further treatment, including mounting with poly (vinyl butyral) is completed in the laboratory.
