Abstract
Wall paintings dating from the 10th to 19th century are found in 300 churches in Georgia. Since 1950, systematic cleaning and conservation of these wall paintings has been carried out. Both tempera painting and fresco were used. In some cases, a thin plaster layer was detected under the painting. In others a glue-chalk ground with coal and straw fillers was used. Efflorescent salts were sometimes observed. Red-brown, grey, and ochre pigments were used in one case. Details of restoration work are described in scientific accounts with technical documentation.
