Abstract
The method of mounting water-damaged and dislodged frescoes of the Cathedral of Ascension of Rostov is described. The painting is placed face down, the back secured with a block of foam, and a mortar is injected between the two, filling the voids. Structural features of the foam block are enumerated. Other methods of securing fresco-type paintings include the use of animal-hair woven into cloth and using water-insoluble adhesives, the use honey-comb structures as supports, etc. Methods of protecting wall-painting in vaults against water damage are also discussed.
